My name is Lucy Cullen, the artist behind Lucy Cullen Art, let me tell you it’s been a long road to get here! I first properly discovered art in Transition Year in school. I experimented with artistic whims in the run up to the leaving cert and did a portfolio course in the hopes of attending art college. It came to pass that I decided to pursue the academic rather than the practical obtaining a degree in Art History and Italian from UCD. Once I received my degree I went on to study Theatre, Media and Special effects Make-up Artistry. Over those 12 years I have lived in New Zealand, Scotland and once again home in Ireland, always finding myself standing at familiar crossroads. This is a junction across which I have danced back and forth with my art. Previously I always felt I had to choose my day job over my dream job, I have struggled over the years to allow myself to be an artist, needless to say it has taken quite some time to arrive at this place.

I sat down one day to open my sketch pad, as I always would when the settings were just right, but this time was different. This was the arrival of a new style and expression for me but most importantly it brought with it the beginning of a new wave of motivation and inspiration. For the most part I have always used the human form as the subject of my work. I have read poetry, listened to music, heard quiet conversations and witnessed landscapes all of which I have wanted to express through the human form. Years ago I used to create darker heavier detailed pieces but more recently I have found my voice through a minimalist line art style. But that's not where it stopped and I have loved getting to explore other mediums, particularly oil painting!

My work is motivated by the belief that I can reach others with my art. I am motivated by the knowledge that I have truly felt the creation of each and every one of my pieces, each is an incarnation of a quality, value or emotion I have experienced. I have decided I need to act upon my desire to nurture a creative culture in my life. I want to surround myself with culture, expression, art and artists so I can become better acquainted with the world they inhabit. This is something that I look forward to everyday.
